Title: i226 nic supported?
Post by: FLguy on August 18, 2022, 03:51:24 AM
Getting one of these Topton systems off Aliexpress.  They don't have the unit I wanted, and they want to replace it with a system that has i226 nics.  But I remember we had to wait some time to get the i225 supported.  Does anyone know if the i226 is supported?

Thanks for the time and support,
Nick

That one should be included in the FreeBSD igc driver already, as the PCI-IDs are in there:

The I226 is a low-power version of the I225, supporting EEE, but it probably has the same programming interface.

Hi,

i can confirm the i226-v NICs are supported with the latest OPNsense version 22.7.
I've ordered this Topton device 15 days ago and received it yesterday.
https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005004687321549.html?spm=a2g0o.order_detail.0.0.18816368dwlfSV&gatewayAdapt=glo2deu

Ordered it without any RAM and NVMe as I had both at my home and I guess the ones from Topton are not that reliable.
OPNsense has been installed directly, so no HyperVisor or similar.

I can't verify if it's 2.5 GB as I have only 1GB network at the moment.

AND the manufacturer of the NIC is shown as "Shenzhen Ferex Electrical Co.,Ltd".
So not sure if that's really an Intel NIC?!

Kind Regards

Hi Der Saarländer,

power consumption I don't know at the moment, as I've not measured it.
Maybe I do it in the next days, but I don't care too much about it.

I've the Intel N5105 which is more than enough for my case. (Single-flat doing constant home-office and have only limited devices (~6) in LAN & WLAN.
(Honestly I don't think the N6005 is so much better, even it's newer. It costs more and consumes more power for just a bit more performance.
(see posts here https://www.servethehome.com/).
But as said, I've only a very small network.

RAM (8GB) and SSD (NVMe 128GB) I had spare ones. However any way, I'd never took the chinese / aliexpress ones, as they're too weak. lot of videos and forum posts confirmed that. And here in Germany / Europe those things are not that expensive any more
If you want exact figures I can get them, just let me know and send a DM.

Kind Regards

Title: i226 nic supported? YES. but Topton hmmm... IDK

Hey all,

i226 does work and has already been confirmed above. After finally receiving the unit and installing OPNsense 22.7 works without any issues.  The original plan was to do a drop replacement for an older FW deployment 21.x, but I didn't get what I purchased.  This may be the main reason for this post.  Not saying I'm a big fan of Topton nor was it a completely horrible experience either.

I had first purchase this unit: N6005 w/4x i225 (https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803821383058.html).  on 7/22, followed up on 8/10, and they replied less then 24hours.  they "will update the shipping info soon".  Not sure what that means.  The next day, they offered me "an upgrade" only because the unit I purchased was no longer in stock, but aliexpress was reporting over 400 Pieces available.  It was my bad, but I'm not in the ali message center every day.  But I replied on 8/17 yes please ship it (the reason for the start of this thread).  The unit I received was this: N6005 w/4x i226 (https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804440929471.html) about 3 or 4 weeks later.
Since then I installed OPNsense 22.7 (since then updated to 23.1) and FW performance so far is good.    Reboots take ~1:04 and ping loss 51 secs (linux ping).

Other cons:

Other Pros:

I would spend a few extra dollars and purchase Protectli.  You can receive the product within 5 to 10 days.
