mail.ddddd.com should resolve to the wan address
And on the wan IP you need a portforwarding for at least https to the internal ip of the exchange server under Firewall: NAT: Port Forward
More details can be found in the official documentation at https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/nat.html#port-forwarding

i will check that out... new to the opnsense firewall.. usually use sonicwall or firewalla never had to do that before... as long as i have internal dns records for that it would goto the internal..  a record mail  1.1.1.1 and thats it...

Sorry, could be my misinterpretation ... It is not that clear what you mean by "internal dns records" ...
Can you please explain your setup (IPs, network structure, DNS settings) and goal more in detail?
