Title: DHCP Question
Post by: spetrillo on April 22, 2022, 10:45:14 PM
Hello all,

I have a server that was added to DHCP in a couple steps. The first step was that DHCP assigned it an address of 192.168.1.27. I immediately logged into the switch that this server is connected to and changed the vlan of the server's port, so that it would be in the proper server vlan. Now the server has an IP of 192.168.2.98, which is correct.

When I try to ping the server from my workstation, using the hostname of the server, its coming back with the original IP of 192.168.1.27. I have restarted the DHCP server in OPNsense but still no go. Why is this happening?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Spetrillo,

I know sometimes MacOS computers are very annoying with holding their local DNS cache, did you try to clear caches on your workstation?

And what happens when you ping from the router itself?
You can find the ping option under Interfaces -> Ping, and then don't forget to select your range in the source address.

On your OPNSense Box, what does it say: Interfaces > Diagnostics > ARP Table.
Which IP does the MAC Address of the server belong to?
