Title: Zerotier any better than normal vpn
Post by: robertkwild on April 07, 2022, 08:48:23 PM

Hi all,

Just come across a new vpn or if it is that, called zerotier

https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/how-tos/zerotier.html

I have already on my firewall ipsec openvpn and wireguard

Just wondering if anyone's used it and what you think

Thanks,
Rob

That product is completely out of consideration for me after reading this line in the docs:
QuoteFirstly, it is important that you have signed up to Zerotier at the Zerotier Portal.

VPN means "virtual private network". I.e. I control each and every single node.

Exactly what I was thinking, a vpn should be under your control and not some cloud server to manage it

I think you can install the server yourself in your network

Is this it

https://docs.zerotier.com/self-hosting/introduction/

You can't tho self host the controller with Web gui

It's not better or worse, it's different and occasionally useful.
