OPNsense Forum

OPNsense 22.1 newly installed.  It keeps crashing/becoming unresponsive every few hours.  Can't get to local devices or the Internet.

Topology:

ATT BGW210-700 (192.168.0.254) router in passthrough mode (re1) --> Opnsense firewall (192.168.1.254) running on mini-pc (re0) --> switch

CPU: (Intel(R) Celeron(R) J4125 CPU @ 2.00GHZ (4 cores, 4 threads)
8GB Ram
Disk usage 2%
Memory usage: 45%

The most recent crash:
Went down around 8:25pm
Rebooted BGW Router around 8:27pm.  No change
Re-booted OPNsense around 8:32pm.  Everything came back up.

I don't know what portion of logs to post, so forgive me for posting most of the logs between the time it became unresponsive to the time it was re-booted.  Could someone please tell me what my issue(s) might be.

Note: The WAN interface is configured as DHCP.  I recall reading somewhere someone had a similar problem and fixed it by configuring it as a static IP.  I could do that, I'm just not sure what values to use: Broadband (external) IP on BGW or subnet (internal - 192.168.0.254)IP?

I still don't know the cause for this, and I changed my WAN from DHCP to static.

But, I have noticed something:  I've gone to this ATT site and ran the speed test: https://www.att.com/support/speedtest/

When I run it the first time, it returns my upload/download speeds.  When I run it a second time, the router freezes / becomes unresponsive.  I don't know if there is a connection or it's just coincidence, but I've done this twice now with the same results.

Also, could installing Sensei have anything to do with any of this?

I also had issues with PowerD on a recent i7 CPU (2019, same year as yours) - disabling it resolved a similar-ish problem for me, relying on the CPU scaling instead,

Had no issues with a much older Celeron J1900 using PowerD, until I upgraded to the above.

Thank you.  Installed os-realtek-re as suggested.

Turns out my problem was twofold:

1. I had installed Zenarmor Sensei.  It increased my memory usage from 10% to 45%.  It was definitely the cause of the crashes because after uninstalling it, my OPNsense router has been up and running smooth for a day now.

2. After submitting the uninstall report to Zenarmor, Sunny Valley Networks support reached out to me (that's pretty awesome!) and reported that: "Zenarmor uses netmap which is an Operating System subsystem to grab packets off the wire. And our experience is that netmap doesn't play well with Realtek drivers"  They also recommended installing the realtek-re-kmod package.

So, for now, I'm back up and I'm good.  I'll get back to Sensei when I have a better sense of what I'm doing!
