Title: Installation of OPNsense fails.
Post by: Mudderkage on January 13, 2022, 01:29:05 PM
I am trying to install OPNsense 21.7.1 on my PC.  :)

I downloaded 2 images files:
OPNsense-21.7.1-OpenSSL-vga-amd64.img.bz2
OPNsense-21.7.1-OpenSSL-serial-amd64.img.bz2
I tried both images.
I tried Rufus and balenaEtcher to write the images to USB.
I tried 3 different USB drives.
I tried 2 different PCs (old HP i7 desktop tower + not so old Lenovo laptop).
Little different messages, but same result. BTX loader halted.  :(

Long time ago, CraigHead suggested starting on the FreeBSD Release Mini-Memstick image:
forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=4526.msg17296
That also fails.  :(

If I use exactly the same procedure, but use pfSense-CE-memstick-2.5.2-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz image, then installation gives me no problems at all.

Any suggestions?
Are there other (maybe older) OPNsense images I can try?

Best regards
Jan

Are you able to compare the partitioning scheme of the pfsense stick that works with the one created with your tools so you can match them. I.e MBR or GPT.
And it'll be easier to use the VGA image for a standard pc. The serial one is for embedded systems that only have serial ports but no vga or better.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I managed to get OPNsense installed now.
Procedure was to install pfSense  :-X and use the dd command to write the OPNsense to the USB drive.
After that it boots without problems.
Strange that Rubus and other Windows tools can create the pfSense bootable drive, but not OPNsense.
Whatever...   it works.  :)

I'm glad you're up and running.
These tools probably can but not with default settings. As an exercise you could still do what I suggested, to burn the image as you did before and see what partitioning scheme it creates on each case.

I just used rufus to create a USB stick and installed 22RC1 the other day, no problems...strange.
