Hello, for the synchronization, can a user different from 'root' be used?

Yes please, as Password is stored in plain in config.xml. but it needs Admin rights

but is it supported?, in the pre-OPNsense era, PFSense didn't allow the use of an user other than root (learnt it the hard way)

Its supported, yes. Create a user called sync, huge password, admin group on both sides and go
