Title: Sensei any good for home?
Post by: g0nz0uk on March 30, 2021, 01:57:35 PM
Hello,

I have a simple home network that I've rebuilt.

Firewall - OPNsense (was pfSense) on a HP 730 with Quad Nic, 8Gb mem, 32GB SSD, Quad COre 2.7GHz CPU.
Hypervisor - Single ESXi 7 host
24 port switch with various VLANs

I used pfBlocker at home to stop certain categories and it was very nice to be honest.

I'm now looking at a simple Ad blocker and category blocker for home, is Sensei the way to go?

If not are there any other recommendations?

I don't really want to add to much load to my OPNsense firewall so I can use a VM.

Thanks

I really like AdGuard Home.

You need to enable @mimugmail's community plugin repo to install it:

Hi g0nz0uk,

Sensei totally meets your requirements and more. It doesn't block only Ads, also various categories and threats. You can define your custom apps and lists and see your network deeply with various reports with the drill-down feature.

I install the nextdns cli (doh proxy) on my opnsense firewall and have it do ad blocking. I'm pretty new to Sensei still and haven't compared its ad blocking with NextDNS. I have all of the malware filters enabled and most of teh categories except undecided safe and it records a handful of hits per day.

You may use any DNS server you wish (yes, even DoT and DoH). Sensei does not care about which DNS server you use.
