Wouldn't it be nice to have an somewhat official Discord channel? not bashing on forums as a platform but... I kind of miss the option to discuss ideas and such :)
I know a lot of people dislike Discord, but there are a lot of other platforms that could be used instead, i'd even prefer something like irc or matrix over forums now days :)
I also understand that a forum has a nice interface for users to search for known issues, but one doesn't have to rule the other one out does it?
Isn't discord more for gamers?
There is a signal or telegram group and this forum and IRC.
In my opinion IRC and forum should do it for network people, not all of us have time to monitor multiple apps or services.

I guess this was the intention, cant say thats the case anymore :) i'w grown to like Discord mostly for it's great webhook support and good bot API, but i can understand why most companies and such doesn't manage their community over discord due to the gamer image it holds.

Absolutely :) if i could get the server/channel for irc i'd love to join :D never really understood telegram...
[Edit] nwm found it! :)
yes, this would be a great idea.
its good to have chat where you can bounce ideas and get more immediate assistance if needed (and also to help fellow geeks)
and no its not for gamers, i'm on about a few dozen discord 'channels' and a majority of them are for things like Home Assistant, Docker, Linux related chat.
It's a good idea, actually. Did you create one?
Discord is a good platform and not only for gamers – I use it at my job to communicate with colleagues because we've got a common server for the entire company.
The thing that I like there is that you can choose from a wide variety of bots that are going to help you with moderation. Learning how to use bots on discord (https://partnersinfire.com/passion-fire-2/discord-bots/) is not difficult, and they can save you lots of time. They are smarter than you think, and you can make them activate functions that you personally need. It is something like programming but for beginners.
I wouldnt do this, the community is not that big and splitting it again would lower the ppl here. Already hard to handle two reddit subs
It would be a great way to stay up-to-date on new features and bug fixes.
I completely agree! It would be great to have an official Discord channel where people can discuss ideas and ask questions. There are a lot of other platforms that could be used instead of Discord, but I think it would be the most convenient for people. Discord is also great for quickly getting help from other users. I already have experience creating art discord servers (https://discordtree.com/discord-art-servers), so I can easily create one. Having a forum is also great for people who want to search for known issues. I don't see why one has to rule the other one out.
I am on the camp of negatory on discord. Let the gamers game!
I wish there was a discord, every other tech project I have worked on has one, whether official or community built. Get my questions answered in 10 minutes or less. Stuff stalls on here for months.

If it stalls here, why should they get answered in 10 mins on Discord??

The forum here is the biggest place for information about OPNsense.
It's searchable for non registered Users which is important.
For small issues or just discussing something like discord wouldn't be bad (I hate discord). But there is also an unofficial telegram group, maybe that's already what you are looking for?
If not, why do you don't open up a discord?

It seems that people get notified in a more optimized way, as a discord server is basically a chat room. I personally dont know anyone that uses IRC anymore. Throwing out a question in a help chat on discord to 3000 people that are currently online, who are likely paying attention because they are likely members of many tech servers, just gets faster responses. Im not sure that I have encountered another program that is this opposed to that kind of community. Personally, I may be forced to switch to pfsense here soon because my inquiries stagnate here on the forum, and my Opnsense box hasnt operated correctly in months.
To me discord is just floating, not searchable via Google and you heavily depend on activity.
Just post the link of your problem

Discord has come a long way, not only are chats searchable if the server owner lest you view historys, but you can even have channels formatted as forums and support tickets. Even the chats can have threads. Its no longer exclusively linear.
This aged well.
With the fall of Reddit, a forum should always exist.
Discord is not just for games like others mentioned, homelab, 3d printing, security, you name, there are no restrictions.
It would be awesome to have an OPNSense Discord in the sense of people can talk in real time, users can help each other instead of waiting for the post to be seen and replied by some hero, that is what discord is for.
Homelab Discords I am into, people share experience, provide help in real time about everything, and yet, there is forum like this one.
One does complement the other in a very positive way.
I might be getting old, but I much prefer Discord over 90s style forums, myself :D
Of course, I am already using Discord for gaming, so there's also the convenience factor.
