Title: New user here - My first impressions.
Post by: guest27531 on February 06, 2021, 04:14:46 PM
Oh Boy - Where I am going to start ...

Ok, I am a brand new OPNSense user since yesterday.  before that I was using pfSense.

I must say that I m impressed by OPNSense so far.  I use a Mini PC as a firewall / router and it has those Realtek Network adapters.  In pfsense I had disconnections every 10 minutes, or the link would just go down until I reboot.  With OPNSense .... Just worked out of the box , even support hardware offloading with no issues and I can route the full Gigabit speed with super low latency.  On pfsense, it was just awful....

The box i have has a modest Celeron J4125. and 8Gb of RAM with 128Gb NVMe I plan to build my own small form factor router with intel Nic but not now because I do not have a lot of devices yet.  Altough this is a low cost , low power cpu - I can run Suricata on it and insight and when I fully load my line at 1Gbps , the CPU barely gets 50% on use.  Impressive.

The UI is snappy , intuitive and it just works out of the box.

I will be around asking for some questions probably.  I am not an a networking expert but I learn.

Thanks for Reading !

Yes it is very night and day since i switched to OPNsense.  Altough Intel NIC are really better but more expensive, I am very impressed of the performance.

On pfsense it was slow and clunky.  on opnsense it just works flawlessly.
