Hi!
Since I was looking quite some time for a device that I could directly run with OPNsense I'm writing this message so that it hopefully helps others.
I had a look at (sometimes quite old lists / recommendations) like
- https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/wireless/hardware.html and
- https://forum.netgate.com/topic/56196/can-i-use-a-wireless-usb-adapter-to-make-pfsense-a-access-point and
- https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AojFUXcbH0ROdHgwYkFHbkRUdV9hVWljVWl5SXkxbFE&hl=en
Then I tried to find something with 2.4 and 5GHz that support access point mode, is an USB dongle, and hopefully would be natively supported. Additionally, I tried to find a device with appropriate chipset among the currently on the market available ones which is also not easy.
Long story short I made a lucky punch and bought for 10€ a new
Zyxel NWD6605 and it works out of the box on OPNsense 20.7.4 like a charm.
ugen3.2: <ZyXEL ZyXEL Dual-Band Wireless AC USB Adapter> at usbus3
rtwn0 on uhub1
rtwn0: <ZyXEL ZyXEL Dual-Band Wireless AC USB Adapter, class 0/0, rev 2.00/0.00, addr 2> on usbus3
rtwn0: MAC/BB RTL8812AU, RF 6052 2T2R
It can be fully configured from the GUI and the only minus is that you cannot have 2.4/5GHz at the same time.
Best regards,
Patrick
HI. I have a generic/no-brand USB WiFi adapter with the same chipset (RTL8812AU). And I'm getting abysmal transmission rate (lower than 3mbps). Other NICs are much faster. I was wondering if your experience would be different.
