Title: Newbie Here - Will this hardware be sufficient for Gig Speed?
Post by: theprez1980 on June 25, 2020, 03:20:40 AM
Hi Gang!

First, let me say I'm a newbie to OpnSense - prevously used PFSense and currently have Untangle in my home.   I plan to use OpnSense for my home for content filtering among other things.

I'm curious what the hardware recommendations are for OpnSense and the Sensei filtering plug in I was reading about?

Will my Intel i5 with 4GB RAM and 1TB be sufficient for my 1Gig WAN speed?

I plan to have the box perform:
DNS
DHCP
Content filtering
Reporting
Captive Portal

to name a few.

Thanks =)

Highly likely it will be.

I'm using an i5 processor;
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20GHz (4 cores)

I have gigabit internet and I'm happy it.

I use an i5 4670K with 8GB RAM. My Internet service is rated at 900Mbps (up and down) and I use IDS/IPS with about 40,000 rules but no VPN. I can get 900+ with CPU load peaking at around 2.8.  As it's a 4 core cpu you can divide that by 4 so that leaves plenty in reserve.
