Title: tuneables - do they work? - eee and smart power down
Post by: ArminF on February 13, 2020, 08:33:22 PM
Aloha,
one of my nics do often goes down. Link is down and i cannot watch Netflix anymore.

I think it is a power option on the nic as the TV is usually used in the evening and during the day its on standby.
So opnsense decides to shutdown the nic.

found this settings on the cli
dev.igb.3.eee_disabled: 0
dev.igb.2.eee_disabled: 0
dev.igb.1.eee_disabled: 0
dev.igb.0.eee_disabled: 0
hw.em.smart_pwr_down: 0

would 1 disable or enable them? I think its worth a try.
Ah.. Nic is a 4 Port Intel211 and i found a lot to read here and on google.

So my plan is to start disabling the settings through tuneables.

thanks
armin

Did a test and set all the tuneables in the system config page.
Zero seems to be default "off".

New
dev.igb.3.eee_disabled: 1
dev.igb.2.eee_disabled: 1
dev.igb.1.eee_disabled: 1
dev.igb.0.eee_disabled: 1
hw.em.smart_pwr_down: 1

Saved and rebooted the machine.
Yesterday and today the NIC did not decide to go offline.
Keep fingers crossed...

So wife is not happy.. Yesterday the NIC went offline again.

Workaround is to unplug the cable switch on the device (android TV) and connect back.
All is working again.

Do this tuneables be loaded into the loader config or do i have to set the deeper in the FreeBSD?

thanks

Well,
as i am lazy i did setup a cron with a periodic interface reset on my LAN3.
Maybe this will take the trouble off....

Did you try to switch out the network cable?

hm.. not yet.
Not sure what the cable should have to do with it.

When you unplug and plug back in the card and connection works.

If you are running your OPNsense on a decent piece of hardware and don't have problems with other connected devices, you are in my view left with two suspects. The cable and a consumer product, the TV set itself.

So... installed a brandnew "purple" cat6 STP cable.

And today we had no issues. OK i left the cronjob on which resets the interface twice a day.
