Title: Log Locations
Post by: spetrillo on August 30, 2019, 03:45:40 PM
Hello all,

I would like to move all my firewall logs to a separate partition. Am I allowed to do this? If yes is there any documentation which shows where all the logs are written?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

Every "Log file(s)" item in the menu is documented now, e.g. https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/logging_system.html

Basically all logging takes place in /var/log and you need to replace it. Make sure you create a new partition, copy everything over and add the mount to /etc/fstab for automatic mounting. The system will mount it for you on boot.

This method is incompatible with /var MFS (system: settings: misc)

Cheers,
Franco

Thank you sir for the quick reply. One last question...when the install is happening does it take all the available space for the install or just what it needs? For example I have a 120 gig drive in my device.

It needs a custom install then. Or a second disk.
