Title: OPNSense Limiting Pipes : Unbalanced
Post by: glpragma on March 19, 2019, 05:36:57 PM
Hi All,

I am using OPNsense 19.1.4-amd64.

I don't know why, maybe it's a normal behaviour, but I'd prefer to be aware of that:

I have set to the WAN two pipes (one for UP and the other for DOWN) to 400 Mbps , to limit the  traffic from a particular LAN I have.

At the end of the games I have a perfectly controlled download : around 400Mbps, as expected, but I have lesser values in upload,..   around 310...something like that.

And it's always the same, I tried also with other FWs and I had the same results.
If i crank the value UP, let's say..500Mbps for the pipe, I still have 500MBs in download and roughly 420 in upload.

PS: Same problem with more sophisticated algorhtms such as HSFC...(tried with PFSense)   upload is ALWAYS a way under my maximum limit.

Cannot figure what the problem could be.   Is it a normal pipe behaviour?
Any ideas?

MY hardware: a QOTOM Q575G6 with an i7 7500U skylake, at 3Ghz, with 6 I211-AT Ethernet interfaces.
Thank you guys,
D.

I heard this one or two times, always was low priced hardware. Qotom is good, but 211AT is not the best NIC one might think of.

Thank you for  your answer.

I also began to suspect that the problem may be the ethernet interfaces.

What could be an optimum hardware in your opinion?

Maybe there is already a thread on that topic , here on the forum, can you point it for me?

Thx.
