Title: Help for beginner to set up Opnsense as repeater
Post by: guest20265 on February 15, 2019, 07:20:38 PM
Good day,

I am currently getting started with Opnsense but I think I am in over my head. The configuration and documentation of it is overwhelming for me and I would be grateful for any help.

Let me describe my situation first. I am sharing my flat with others and our internet is barely usable. Because of this I am using a  public hot spot service of the german Telekom to connect to the internet. It is fairly cheep and there are hot spots in my proximity.
I bought myself this (https://www.kuma.co.uk/products/caravan-usb-wireless-adapter (https://www.kuma.co.uk/products/caravan-usb-wireless-adapter)) external wlan antenna which is usb 2.0 compatible to connect to them. On my PC I used Connectify (https://www.connectify.me/ (https://www.connectify.me/)) to create a hotspot for the rest of my devices. The software sadly is less than optimal though and this is why I am trying to use Opnsense on an old Laptop instead.

So the setup I am trying to achieve is this: I want to connect my strong external wlan antenna to my Laptop and use it to connect to one of Telekom's public hotspots. Then I want to connect my other devices to my laptop with Wlan or Lan.
Is this setup possible to achieve with Opnsense?

Thank you again for any help!

WiFi support in FreeBSD is rather poor, especially in AP mode.

This fits your bill though: https://www.tp-link.com/uk/products/details/cat-9_TL-WR802N.html
