Title: Unable to ping LAN or access GUI
Post by: fcnchuck on October 13, 2018, 07:16:22 pm
New install of 18.7 on stand alone device. Assigned an interface and IP to LAN only.

I am unable to ping or access the GUI using the assigned IP. Just getting time out requests when I ping. The IP is on the same subnet (192.168.0.0/24) as the rest of my network. I have no VLANs set at the moment and i have the device plugged directly into my switch for the time being so i can set it up and get familiar with the GUI before i deploy it in my network for real.

Thank you for any help anyone can provide.

Here are some things to try:

1) Disconnect the device from your local network.  Set your computer to a static IP on the device's local subnet, with the gateway set to the IP address of the LAN interface, connect a cable directly from your computer to the device's LAN interface, and see if you can ping / access GUI that way.  If you can, then the problem is probably network configuration - perhaps IP conflict, or possibly you have DHCP enabled on the OPNsense box and it's conflicting with whatever serves DHCP addresses on your network normally.

2) If step one didn't work, then maybe it's hardware. If possible boot the device from a Linux live CD and see if you can ping its network interface remotely.

3) If you can connect to the device in step 2, it's not hardware.  Maybe go back to the console interface of the device and run interface assignments again, being extra sure you're configuring the NIC you think you are.

Got it thank you.

I re-enabled the WAN and LAN interfaces. Then let the LAN interface be assigned via DHCP while leaving the WAN interface disconnected. Once an IP was assigned i could ping and hit the GUI.

Im still a little confused why allowing the IP to be assigned via DHCP I was able to connect, but if i tried to set a static LAN IP, i get nothing?

What address did your DHCP assign it?  Maybe there's something else on your network that already had the IP address you were trying to use.

It assigned 0.9

I had given it 0.150. But before i assigned it i verified that nothing on the network had that IP assigned or reserved. So im not sure how there could of been a conflict.
