Title: Is it safe to upgrade to 19.1.4 now?
Post by: RouterGuy2019 on March 23, 2019, 01:15:39 pm
I have held off on doing this upgrade because  I have seen so many people having problems with it.  I am still on 18.7 and I am wondering is it safe to upgrade now?  My big concern was this...

WAN Link Cycling Up and Down
https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=11879.0

and also the issue with it kernel panic after reboot of upgrade.  This is my main router and if something goes wrong it will take me quite a while to get back online so I REALLY want to avoid problems if I can.

Thanks for all your help and all your hard work on this great software,

I have no problems with the issues you mentioned above.
It's really stable for me.

You can create a back out plan for your upgrade. Download a copy of your config from the firewall web gui, or take an image of your storage with Clonezilla. If you have insurmountable problems, install 18.7 and restore your config, or restore your disk from the Clonezilla image.

Make sure to download the boot ISO files and preferably test them on USB sticks (18.7 and Clonezilla) while you still have an internet connection, and note down the MAC addresses of your interfaces since they may not get the same assignments.

Thanks for the responses, I did forget to ask one thing though...
Right after 19.1.4 came out the notes said wait a few days and then this will be the upgrade path from 18.7.  So I am wondering is that the case now, will I go straight from 18.7 to 19.1.4?

Thanks, RouterGuy2019

You can't go straight to 19.1.4 since OPNsense only supplies the 19.1 image. You need to upgrade this to 19.4 by the usual means.

He meant this part: "Due to the severity of the UEFI boot panic 19.1.4 will be the new initial release for all upgrades from 18.7 within a day or two depending on additional testing and confirmation."

Not sure if it's so far yet. Haven't read it somewhere.

That is what I meant, and if anyone knows if that has been implicated I would love to know.

The 18.7.10 -> 19.1.4 upgrade change was carried out within a day of the initial 19.1.4 announcement.

The images for 19.1.4 had to be pushed back due to little time for image integrity tests this week, but will follow early next week.

If you need 19.1.4 now and 19.1 is no good install 18.7 and upgrade from there.

I'm speaking for the main mirror here. If a mirror does not sync for one reason or another it could still end up as 19.1 instead of 19.1.4. But this is just a cliff note.

Cheers,
Franco

Updated 4 qotoms so far, mixed setups (bridged modems, routing modems, PPPoE), no issues.

I have upgraded 4 Qotoms from 18.7.10 to 19.1.4 this week with mixed success. The first one was a remote upgrade that went smooth. No problems at all so I thought I was gucci. But the second one (remote upgrade) didn't come back after the upgrade so I had to go to the client site and I swapped it with another Qotom with 18.7.10 while I did trouble shooting. I figured out the issue was with the virtual terminal so on the remote box I cleared that option and did another upgrade expecting it would go through this time. No dice. Had to go back to client site again and this time when I logged into the console none of the router functions had started and it would drop me straight into a bash shell. So I just did a fresh install from usb stick, restored the configuration, and had got it working. I chalked it up to a possible mistake I made while performing the upgrade and thought everything was fine.. So after I worked around those issues I thought I had everything figured out so I did a third install and this one went smoothly. Unfortunately I played with fire one more time and on a 4th upgrade I again had the problem where on reboot the router functions didn't start and when logging in it dropped me straight into the bash shell. Again I had to perform a fresh install and restore the configuration. Any thoughts what might be going on?
