Title: Alias Documentation needs updating - it is lacking detailed explanations
Post by: skatopn on March 05, 2024, 01:22:48 pm
The documentation page at https://wiki.opnsense.org/manual/aliases.html on Alias configuration is lacking essential configuration details.

There are no examples of how to configure:

A very similar question was asked way back in 2018, here:
https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=9775.msg44631#msg44631 (https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=9775.msg44631#msg44631)
It has had over 4000 views, which should inform the developers, but there is not a single answer offered.

I would update the help text myself, but I don't have the answers myself to do so.

Can someone at least provide a screenshot or simple example of these Alias types showing how they must be configured or what OPNsense expects in the "Content" field?

Please stop spamming. This is your final warning.

I apologize if I have come across that way. I think my definition of spam may be different.
Spamming is not my intent. Any criticism is meant to be constructive.
Apologies if it does not come across that way.

I am not new to firewalls, but I am new to OPNsense, and still in the process of learning how it works (differently from other FWs), and still getting it setup for the first time.
This is why I have a flurry of questions. I would expect this pattern to be typical with new users.
Once it is configured and working how I want it to, I will not have reason to be on the forums that much.

Although this question was still related to Alias configuration, you will note that this was an entirely new question.
Yes, I read the Forum Rules and I followed them. I would have replied on the other users thread, but it seemed to be closed for updates so I had no choice (I think because it is in a Legacy code version section?)

I hope you understand and accept my apologies.

I genuinely appreciate all your feedback and recognize you are very knowledgeable on this product.
