Title: Unbound (as recursive lookup) and pppoe as WAN interface only
Post by: karma on February 12, 2021, 03:20:47 pm
Hi guys,
I'm an enthusiastic user of OPNSense since 2017 but never had problems (mmm maybe some little ones but resolved soon).
Now I've got an hard issue with Unbound in recursive loockup configuration as I changed configuration of WAN interface as pppoe passthrough from fritzbox (in fact I'm also waiting for definitive FTTH installation with direct fiber connection behind opnsense machine, so I've made some configs changes).

Since I had changed this configuration, Unbound stopped working well (as recursive lookup), and I've reverted his back to working only with "DNS query forwarding" checkbox feature (...sad workaround).
I've also tried with a new fresh installation with only WAN and Unbound configuration but issue still remain.
Is there anything I haven't seen ?

Lots of thanks

Hey,

it seems that I encountered the same problem at the night from Friday to Saturday. But I did not change any of the configuration at this time. In the morning I realized that unbound could not recursive lookup any data. I am using PPPoE from OPNsense and also have a FritzBox with PPPoE-Passthrough. This setup worked nearly 12 month.

This issue is reproducible by enabling PPPoE on the WAN interface. When using DHCP and the connected FritzBox as a router, everything works fine.
I tried this with a complete new setup and more interestingly it seems to affect the downstream computers to. Installed unbound on my computer and the same issue appears here. Turning DHCP (WAN) on resolves the issue there too.

I am not sure where the root of the issue is. Is it possible that it is the fault of the ISP and we both using the same (North Western Germany)?

Hi,
maybe not, I'm using TIM (FTTC) from Italy.
